Did you know that asbestos is still being put into materials you use today and is still being imported from other countries into the United States?  The age of your home or commercial building has no relevance.  Call for an asbestos inspection before you remodel!  Be sure to check the new products you are using to remodel with!!  If the product label says, "contains natural elements" or "contains hazardous materials," your new product could contain asbestos.  

What can have asbestos in your environment?  The following list is a short list.  There are many more materials that could potentially contain asbestos.

  • Floor Tile & Floor Tile Adhesive
  • Linoleum & Linoleum Adhesive
  • Ceramic Tile, Grout, and Mortar
  • Vinyl Base & adhesive
  • Ceiling Tiles & mastic (glue)
  • Ceiling Popcorn Texture
  • Sheetrock or Wallboard, Sheetrock or Wallboard Mud and Textures
  • Siding, Roofing Products, Felts, Shingles, Roofing Tars
  • Window Glazing
  • Mortars
  • Insulations
  • Chimney Flue Lining
  • Caulks
  • And the list goes on......

There is a need for asbestos inspections!  The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has reported that out state Minnesota is not pulling a representative number of asbestos permits in comparison to the amount of construction work performed.  MDH has established the Greater MN Outreach Project which will provide education materials and compliance assistance to Minnesota cities and counties in order to increase the number of asbestos permits in areas of Greater MN.

Are you conducting an asbestos survey or filing a notification prior to renovation or demolition?  This is the most common MPCA asbestos violation.
